Ever since Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden, people have wrestled with this question.
God said to Adam and Eve that they could eat from the any of the trees in the garden except for one. Genesis 2:16-17, "And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Then the serpent cast doubt upon God's Word. Genesis 3:1b, "He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”"
It is the perpetual tendency of people to doubt God's Word and to choose another way. We were told that humanism would save us, but it did not. We are told that technology will save us. But while knowledge, science and technology are not inherently evil, if we put our trust in them, we are in effect repeating the Garden of Eden.
God wants us to trust in Him wholeheartedly. It is He who has saved us, is saving us and will ultimately save us.
