Feeling Anxious?

Concerned that you or another person may be experiencing anxiety or having challenges with mental load?

A good place to start is visiting your General Practitioner (GP) or doctor, who can connect you up with support.
Many GP clinics now have on-site Health Improvement Practitioners (HIPs), registered health professionals who provides brief sessions (usually less than 30 minutes) that focus on practical strategies to support health and wellbeing. They can also link people to external services.

Some of the common aspects HIP supports people help with include:
  • Stress
  • Sleep
  • Anxiety, depression, or feeling down
  • Pain
  • Coping with physical health conditions
  • Relationship challenges
  • Parenting
  • Child and Youth wellbeing
  • Pre and Postnatal wellbeing
  • Drug or alcohol use
  • Gambling
  • Other addictions

  • NZ Ethnic Social Services - free counselling for ethnic minorities in multiple languages.

  • Youthline - free counselling via phone, in person, or online.

  • Puāwaitanga - Free individual counselling via phone for WINZ clients and enrolled students at AUT or the University of Auckland. Self-refer by calling 0800 782 999 (9 am - 9 pm, 7 days per week)

  • Aunty Dee - Free online tool that aims to help people work through a problem or problems. By encouraging people to think about, reflect and explore their problems in a structured way, people can proactively find solutions to their problems and then act. Although anyone can use the tool, it is aimed at Pacific and Māori young people aged 14-25 years. The website also has a library of tips and tricks for some common problems such as trouble sleeping or problems with relationships, friends, health and school.

  • Just a Thought - Free Cognitive Behavioural Therapy self-paced courses to support you to manage anxiety and other mental health challenges.

  • Anxiety NZ: Empowered - short, self-paced online course for supporting people to manage stress.

  • Mental Wealth - tips for young people on how to support their mental wellbeing regarding a range of topics.

  • Talking Minds - stories, support and information on psychosis made by young people with lived experience of psychosis and mental health professionals.

  • Surfing the Wave: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) programme - This is a group-based skills programme for 12–24-year-olds living in the Counties Manukau area, focusing on teaching Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness (Relationship) Skills.
