Following Christ can be a bit of a paradox...
When we choose to follow Christ, we are choosing not to follow ourselves. We have desires that may or may not come from God and we need to filter them through the Word of God and to come to Jesus to discern whether they are helpful or not.
We are called to die daily, to carry our cross. That's what it means to follow Jesus. It says in Galatians 2:20, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." We follow his example by dying daily so that we can live with him both today and forever.
